Seaside resort renames itself after discount website

I’m a sucker for a name-change stunt, as I think I’ve said numerous times in the past, and here’s a quick one that made me smile.

Deal – a seaside resort in Kent renowned for its independent shops – has indefinitely twinned with discount website Voucherbox. It will, for today only, be renamed to: Voucherbox: Home of Deal.

The agreement was struck between the local chamber of trade and Voucherbox. The site is offering free listings on its ‘virtual high street’ to local businesses.

So far, according to this piece on the Telegraph (in 2014, Deal won The Telegraph award for High Street of the Year), the list of retailers that have signed up to the promotion include chain stores such as Iceland, Superdrug and Poundland.

Castles Removals, Castles Self-store and Castles Security Shredding, all part of the same company, are the only local businesses currently taking part.

As is customary in small town news, the Mayor, has been trotted out. David Cronk said:

“Many of our retailers have seen difficult trading conditions in recent years and Voucherbox bring with them a wealth of online retailing experience and expertise that we hope to benefit from.”
