‘Hope Is Everything’ – Netflix donates benches to local councils to celebrate mental health and genuine human connection

With the launch of the hotly anticipated final season of Afterlife, starring Ricky Gervais – Netflix has installed 25 benches in parks across the UK to promote healthy conversations around mental health.

The show, which centres around the life of local Journalist Tony tells the story of his severe depression following the unexpected death of his wife. The one place he begins to find solace? The local churchyard bench – where he reflects on his loss and eventually begins to open up to those around him.

Working with CALM, the benches feature a QR code that leads people to further emotional support and additional resources should they need them. So far, benches have been installed in major city parks such as Bath, Birmingham, Glasgow, Liverpool, and Taunton with the words “Hope is Everything.” inscribed onto each one.

Gervais, the creator of shows including The Office and Extras, said: “We hope the benches will create a lasting legacy for After Life, as well as become a place for people to visit, and we are thrilled to be associated with Calm and the great work they do.”

Calm chief executive Simon Gunning said: “Park benches provide opportunities to reflect, talk to someone, sit shoulder to shoulder with someone, and get things off your chest.”
